I think they were Berkely Grads or something like that. But they are extremely talented. Well worth the investment in time and money. I have never got to see them live, but I did get to see a video of one of their concerts. Acoustic Guitar, Standup Bass, and drums. So simple and yet a unique, complex sound.

yep.. ..when i saw them first (was a bit before their second record came out in europe and i had the luck that i hung around with ppl who where much older than me) they didn t even have a complete drumset, lol.. ..just a snare drum, high hat, normal sticks and brooms (hope that stuff is called like that in english, lol "brooms") and the guy was faking the bass drum by jumping on the floor.. ...it was more than amazing and a few month later (after delivering tons of newspapers) i owned my first bass guitar (fender accoustic) , inspired by the violent femmes

I don't think they still use much of a drumset now. Such a sound and they keep is so basic.
