Are you getting any socket errors? such as time out or could not resolve server or bind error? I cant really help you out much because the info is rather vague.

I cant really help you out much because the info is rather vague. *using loopback addy - server as exe accepts connection fine if client is run from enviroment. *using WAN addy - client times out if run from enviroment and server as exe *inside the enviro both work great using either addy ( LAN was removed. unrelated problem) *client as exe errors out on connect with connection forcefully rejected in all cases. **rips out remaining grey hair

tried various other tests, nothing conclusive. seems the client app is having probs because the server has the port. dumped the old code for both and starting from scratch. with any luck that prob wont show up again.
Is there a need for 2 winsocks on the client app? i realize the server needs 2 to handle multiple connects but i cant see a need for 2 in the client. any opinions?

Well if this a regular irc client then one is all you need ( per server ) if this is for msn then 2 are required one for connecting and one to listen for the databetween the server an the ocx
