In any properly implemented situation, an IRCX server is a standard IRC server (ircd-2.x.x, for example) with the extensions to the IRC protocol (RFC1459). IRCXpro is NOT a properly implemented situation! And it costs out the ying-yang too... As for running on Windows... Any version of NT (NT4/2000/XP/2003) should be fine to run a server on if it's configured right. Although no version of Windows should be used to run a site the size of Slashdot, or a network the size of Undernet. Not to advertise, but ignitionServer 0.1.2 is a properly implemented RFC1459+IRCX server for Windows (you can Wine it if you wish -- it doesn't require X). The link is in my signature. It's also open source, in case you want to play with it yourself. It uses a standard ircx.conf file, and if you so please, you could run it as a test server on 6668 or something. There are a few bugs with it that we are aware of (some have been fixed in CVS [now SVN]), but overall it's pretty good for 2 months of work. It's also based off of an IRCd server. Maybe iS will change your mind about IRCX/IRC's relationship? And /vhosts too .

The thread is sticky, can't really bump it when it's stuck at the top anyway
