Three men go fishing on a camping trip. They collect all the fish they caught and put them in a cooler. They agree that when they leave they will divide up the fish equally. In the middle of the night the first man gets sick and decides to leave. He opens up the cooler and counts the fish. He throws one fish away and then takes his third of the fish. Later that night the second man has a family emergency and decides to leave. He opens up the cooler and counts the fish. He throws one fish away and then takes his third of the fish. The third man gets up very early the next morning and decides to leave. He opens up the cooler and counts the fish. He throws one fish away and then takes his third of the fish. None of the men know that the other men had taken any fish.
What is the smallest number of fish that would make this possible?

3rd man : throws 1 + takes 3 1 + 3 * 3 = 10 2nd man br] throws 1 + takes 5 1 + 5 * 3 = 16 1st man br]throws 1 + takes 8 1 + 8 * 3 = 25 so im guessing at 25 fish. although the third man would notice there is a lot less fish than they caught together :\.

it needs trial and error to see how much the first man takes. u cant have an odd value in the first two. and if the first man takes 1 then the second value would be 7 which is odd. if he took 2 then the first value would be 7. and then you would have to cut up fish to share equally. it was trial and error to get the first value then it was just calculations in me head.
