John, Matt, and Richard can build a garage in 6 days. If Matt and Richard work together, they can build the garage in 9 days. If John and Richard work together, they can build the garage in 8 days.
How many days would each man take to build the garage if they worked alone?
This one should take a bit longer

Ok, I've probably done this all wrong but here goes.. John = a Matt = b Richard = c SOa + b + c = 6 [Divide by 3 = 2 days each] b + c = 9 [Divide by 2 = 4.5 days each] a + c = 8 [Divide by 2 = 4 days each] SOIf we add the individual days up we get.. a = 6 days (John) b = 6.5 days (Matt) c = 10.5 days (Richard) Thats wrong isnt it lol.. just a guess.

just saw it and have no solution yet, but right, cypher.. ..would make no sense else because the qestion itself would be false then..

John : 18 days Matt : 24 days Richard : 14.4 days (14 days 6 hours) it all works out right through my checking but didnt expect a decimal place. lol. and they look too high J + M + R = 1/6 m + r = 1/9 j + r = 1/8 j + 1/9 = 1/6 j = 1/18 therefore john does it in 18 days j + r = 1/8 1/18 + r = 1/8 r = 5/72 therefore richard does it in 14.4 days m + 5/72 = 1/9 m = 1/24 therefore matt takes 24 days 1/6 - 1/18 - 5/72 - 1/24 = 0

;D i used speed=distance/time stuff . so its like speed=garages/time tek if your dying question is about the John, Matt, and Richard group then 1/18 * 3 + 1/24 * 5 = 0.375 1 - 0.375 = 0.625 0.625 / 5/72 = 9.000058 it would take John, Matt, and Richard 9 days if John dies 3 days into it then Matt dies 2 days later. ;D

..could have mentioned that "J" means John works one day and "1/6" means (1/6)garage, in case ppl don t understand what you did, lol.. ..nahh, no bothering, i slept away over it yesterday, so *pats cypher*
..and LOL ! (if john dies...) ;D

nah. j is johns building speed in garage per days. the time it takes to build a garage is the number of garages (1) divided by the speed of johns building . J == g/d (garage per days) john makes 1 garage every 18 days if that explains it any better.
