You have two threads. Each of them will burn for exactly one hour if one of its sides is set on fire. How can one measure 45 minutes exactly, using only these threads and a lighter (no regularity can be assumed on the physical structure of the threads, and they are not promised to be identical)?

both threads(y,z) burn 60minutes.. ..i burn both ends of thread y and one end of thread z (i put them together on one site and i have a lighter in both hands, hehe)
after 30 minutes thread y is burned totally and thread z has left 30 minutes.. ..now i burn the other site of thread z, so it will be burned out totally exactly 15 minutes later.. ..and i have measured 30 + 15 minutes

You can't promise that the threads will burn evenly? Just that it takes one hour to burn each in it's entirety?*pulls out her trusty stopwatch, lights one end of one thread clicking her timer to start..........waits 45 minutes and blows it out* There you go! 45 minutes, exactly! ;D

Light both ends of thread A. when it burns out (30 mins) Fold thread B in half and light both ends.

Ummm, that wouldn't work Ohio. Folding thread 'B' in half would give you an additional 30 minutes and 2) because the thread may not burn at an even rate even that 30 minutes is inexact (since half may burn in 15 minutes and the other in 45

Fold in half and light both ends, the split end and the folded end, that will burn in 15 minutes. Nothing was stated that said they would not burn evenly, or at different rates. Don't make the problem harder than it needs to be. No regularity refers to the physical structure(ie: 1/8th in between ridges) Nothing specifies the combutibility rates or irregularities.

Star Trek is pretty good. I use to never watch it or sci-fi period until I met hubby. When he is home, nothing exist on televsion but them silly china cartoons (not knocking the china ppl, I just don't like them cartoons) and the sci-fi tv.
anything else doesn't exist for him. lol
any how, I think star trek is pretty cool
