As many of you know, on October 16, 2003 MSN will be closing it's US chats as well as some others, and will be implementing a subscription only service. The service is $19.95 per year. For any of you who don't want to have to do this, then this thread is set up for anyone who wants to suggest an alternate chat service. So please put your suggestions here for any. This is not a vote of anykind. Any service you want to use is fine. However, this is to suggest the best chat services available.

Well I guess IRC is always an option, despite horrible servers. It wouldn't be to far out from the scripting that we do presently. Yahoo, and all php chats are pretty crap, and people are calling on them to close as well anyway.

go to googles. Type "QuakeNet". Then browse to their requirements page for the irc server. It will give u some idea.
If u r interested in running an irc server, you should talk to Alex.

Well I chat on all kinds of servers including IRCd servers ( zonic.org, undernet.org, st0ned.us, ect... ), IRCx servers ( xpeacex.com ), and java and php chats ( aol -n- yahoo ) all of these are decent chat servers I don't think the platform matters much if chatting is what you are going for. I believe yahoo is actually a pretty good chat environment for chatting an programming if you are willing to give up the whole IRC beef. You could even write a script to work connect to yahoo with mIRC thou the commands would be of no use. Either ways I will pay out the 20 bucks a year to chat its not much, but I can understand how it would bother other people that do not have credit cards, live in us, canada, or japan, or just don't think they should have to pay for a service they have been using years for free.
