ik000ike, I think you and i have been in this discussion several times before; however, this time I tested it a few times with a friend. Friend is using WindowsXP Pro (patched, everything's up-to-date and good) and using the most current version of IRCxPro.
I loaded up my own IRC client (not mIRC) and also had it load an additional 500 sockets to connect to his server (I had his permission to do so). I had Admin access, so I watched as the numbers flew up. About the time it hit 500, I was talking to the computer's owner on IM (on a different box) and he told me that the box that the IRCxPro software was on...is dead. BSOD just like as Ryan stated. Even worst off, he had to format the hard disk as he couldn't get back into the WindowsXP load screen, nor even use his BootDisks (went through all 6 floppies and still didn't fix a thing).
So yes, there is a reason why I dislike IRCxPro on WindowsXP. If you want to test it yourself, just give a nice server address but be warned that it could be @ the cost of your hard disk's data.
Edit Forgot to explain that he had a good working serial (full version) as well.. allowing up to 5,000 connections. He turned on server protection as well, as I wanted him to be sure to have all of the protections on. However, with each connection having a different ip/name...that didn't help too much.

Count me in....... , ozzywiz 3 people seems to little to handle such a 'big' project shouldnt it be a more of a Team/board effort where everbody who wants 2 can take an active part =]

thats a cool idea equin0x.
small groups of like minded and skilled ppl could work on diff areas and then report back to the head honchos - it would be quite effective.
if something is managed properly, no task is TOO big

Chat isn't worth paying for, maybe the protection if you just want to chat, but not to run an MSN Chat Room where you don't exactly get much control over your room.

Very hard for someone to take over your room unless they have the founder pass, and if you have any trouble can talk to any of the staff.

Here's the funny. The xTeam chat server (remember, the IRCX?) got shut down several months ago, and it's process given to another user when everyone refused to even use it (with the exception of David and mike, who was just starting to use it so he could develop a new theme). That server had the potential to be an almost-exact replica of MSN. It would have only taken a little patching to bring in the /pass alias, and the mode $me +h %pass. But ya know, I saw it as a waste of space and resources the way it was. So, I renamed it. I removed all the xt-based rooms. I set up a staff. And I brought on a few rooms that would enjoy having their own server to play with. After about a week, they asked for more control. They wanted to be able to set up kicklists that would last through a system reboot. They wanted to register their nicknames. They wanted to be able to send memos. The staff wanted to be able to force users to leave rooms without having to /kill them. To force nick changes. So, I gave them what they requested. Badda bing, badda boom, UnrealIRCD. The majority of the key users requested it, they got it. Their main reason for requesting was, get this... to be nothing like MSN. They came from MSN in it's peak... when IRC scripts were actually around and allowed. They wanted a home that had nothing to do with the MSN Chat Network. So I see it unlikely that I will ever make it "more like MSN". People wanted webchat 2 years back, I gave it to them... and have kept up on keeping those applets up to date when needed. Webchat was given 3 months after the network was first started, and has been there ever since (as provided at the above URLs). Now, to those of you wanting a website... if you all can get together and decide on what it is you want to do with this project, I'll consider offering up the webhosting for it. But i'd like to know what I'm giving up the space for, before I actually do it. Get back to me on it if you want it... but the 12Stones PSO Chat Network is not going to be "more like MSN"... now, or any time in the forseeable future. Y'all had your chance for real IRCX, and the time passed without usage. Time to move on.

Im sure loon would offer us space anyway, or i would have it on my space (from loon lol ;D)
People didnt want ircx Scott cos people had it already, thats prolly why it didnt take off was cos msn was there. But i think for the majority of people who would just use webchat, it being ircx or ircd doesnt really make any difference.
